This program equips any aspiring or experienced Voice Teacher with all the tools they need to teach vocal technique for all styles of singing- classical to contemporary. The NYVC Voice Teacher Training includes very thorough and in-depth lectures on all aspects of vocal pedagogy. The course also includes observation, private study, master classes, and a guided teaching practicum. Graduates emerge fully prepared to begin their own vocal studio, take their current teaching practice to exciting new levels, and understand their own vocal technique in greater ways than ever before.

Graduates of the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification are welcome to continue their studies in the future with the Advanced Voice Teacher Training Mini-Course. These additional sessions are only for graduates of the full Voice Teacher Training course who would like to further explore their Voice Teaching craft. The Advanced Mini-Course can also serve as a refresher for graduates who are running successful vocal studios, but would like to sharpen their Voice Teaching with even more information and inspiration. Graduates are welcome to expand upon their Training and Certification with this additional course. For those who are really passionate about Voice Teaching, sometimes 40 hours still aren’t enough!

10-Hour Introductory Voice Teacher Training Mini-Course

The NYVC Introductory Voice Teacher Training Mini-Course is ideal for international or out-of-state students traveling to New York for a short time. Voice Teachers often travel to NYC seeking pedagogical information and training to further their Voice Teaching practice. The Introductory Mini-Course allows participants to explore many of the benefits of the Voice Teacher Training & Certification in a short time frame. This training is not a prerequisite to the standard training. It is simply another option for those unable to participate in the full training. Introductory Mini-Course graduates are still eligible for participation in the 40-Hour Voice Teacher Training & Certification after completing this course.


CURRICULUM

Lecture

In the LECTURE section, participants will receive extremely thorough lectures on all aspects of the voice, vocal technique, and vocal pedagogy. This includes Breathing, Anatomy, Laryngeal Studies, Vocal Registration, Vocal Science, Acoustics, Resonance, Posture and Alignment, “Vocal Exercise Design”©, Vocal Styles, Phonetics, Singer Psychology, and much more. In this section of the course, trainees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the human voice and it’s application to vocal students. “No stone is left unturned” as the course covers virtually every practical aspect of singing, vocal pedagogy, and Voice Teaching. Trainees will have the opportunity to address any and all questions or confusions with regard to vocal pedagogy and will emerge with a masterful pedagogical understanding and supreme teaching confidence.

Observation

In the OBSERVATION section, participants will observe vocal technique concepts applied to live singers at New York Vocal Coaching. Some observes take place in a true lesson observation format and other times in an interactive Master Class setting. The observes allow participants to see how vocal pedagogical concepts can be applied skillfully and practically to help singers make fast and tangible improvements. New York Vocal Coaching's students represent a extremely vast array of styles, levels, backgrounds, nationalities, and interests - allowing for a rich educational experience in diagnostic and practical pedagogy.

Personal Study

In the PERSONAL STUDY section, participants will receive one-on-one training with Mr. Stoney at New York Vocal Coaching in Midtown Manhattan. This gives participants a vocal “blueprint” as to how the concepts covered in the Voice Teacher Training apply to their own singing. Having a nuanced understanding of one’s own vocal technique is vital for helping others. Personal Study allows participants to gain a richer understanding of their own individual vocal technique.

Teaching

The TEACHING section of the course is a practicum that gives participants hands-on teaching experience under the care and guidance of Mr. Stoney. Trainees teach selected individuals from New York Vocal Coaching’s wide array of vocal students. The Teaching section is not an exam or test, but rather a Master Class setting guided by Mr. Stoney. As the Voice Teacher trainee teaches, live feedback and guidance is offered with respect to developing a diagnostic ear and understanding how to instinctually and practically apply concepts of vocal pedagogy to singers in the vocal studio.

The NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification was created by Justin Stoney, one of the leading teaching talents in today’s vocal community and the Founder of New York Vocal Coaching. It is designed for aspiring and experienced Voice Teachers seeking to perfect their teaching craft. This course equips Voice Teachers with all the tools they need for a successful professional Vocal Studio. Trainees gain a masterful understanding of vocal pedagogy as it applies to singers of all levels, backgrounds, and musical styles - classical to contemporary. Trainees also have the opportunity to observe, study, and practice applying vocal technique in practical ways. Participants develop a diagnostic ear and learn to identify and address a variety of vocal technique issues. Participants also obtain a very detailed and nuanced understanding of their own vocal technique.

Unlike several other Voice Teacher Certifications, the NYVC Voice Teacher Training is not a “method”. Instead, a great multitude of methods, techniques, and ideas from the world of vocal science and vocal pedagogy are explored. Teachers gain a comprehensive understanding of vocal pedagogy and learn a wide variety of technical, physical, and psychological strategies that have been used historically and in today’s modern vocal studios. No sound that a singer can make is considered “invalid”. Instead, participants learn exactly how sounds from all vocal styles are produced and how to teach them successfully and healthfully. Teachers graduate with vast teaching resources and endless possibilities.

Participants in the NYVC Voice Teacher Training are encouraged to view Voice Teaching as a craft and art-form all its own. From this perspective, teachers learn to trust their teaching instincts and to “teach to the individual” rather than follow a system of methodical rules. The unique gifts and talents of every participant are cultivated and developed. The result is Voice Teachers who emerge with confidence in the accuracy of their information, trust of their diagnostic ears, creativity in their teaching strategies, and unrestricted in their potential to help any singer improve. In short, this training develops true artists in the craft of Voice Teaching.

The NYVC Voice Teacher Training and Certification consists of 4 sections: Lecture, Observation, Personal Lessons, and Teaching.

  • LECTURE

For generations, aspiring Voice Teachers have been largely in the dark when it comes to receiving practical training in Voice Teaching. Graduates of university vocal pedagogy programs have a solid grasp of anatomical and scientific information, but often feel that they lack practical application in the vocal studio - particularly when it comes to the needs of contemporary singers. On the other hand, many practicing Voice Teachers may have wonderful instincts on how to help singers, but are doing so based on a motley of sources (what their former teachers told them, what works in their own vocal books, a few vocal books, web research, trial and error, etc.). Although it seems strange, it is most often the case that Voice Teachers have little or no actual training in Voice Teaching or vocal pedagogy. This is not to say that there aren’t plenty of great Voice Teachers with no formal pedagogical training. In fact, there are many. However, the unfortunate reality is that those who tend to have greatest success have built their teaching craft, done the necessary research, and experimented in the studio totally on their own. This no longer needs to be the case.

To create the NYVC Voice Teacher Training, Mr. Stoney compiled and streamlined an extremely broad range of vocal pedagogy resources, vocal methods and approaches, vocal technique books and articles, and traditional vocal ideas. This, coupled with his own 15,000+ hours of work in the vocal studio with thousands of singers from all styles and from 60+ countries gave Mr. Stoney the inspiration to pave the way for other Voice Teachers. The Voice Teacher Training condenses this vast body of research and experience into a course that makes extremely advanced vocal ideas simple and accessible for others. Voice Teachers no longer need to spend years hunting for answers, guessing, or trying to apply a method. The training and mentorship that so many aspiring Voice Teachers have longed for is now being made available at New York Vocal Coaching.

There have been a wide variety of participants throughout the history of the NYVC Voice Teacher Training And Certification. Voice Teacher Training participants are sometimes those with performing careers looking to begin teaching alongside or in place of their performing. Others are those who have university music or voice degrees, but feel they lack the understanding of exactly how vocal technique and pedagogy can be applied practically to the multitudinous needs of singers. Still others are those who are familiar with how vocal technique applies to some styles (i.e. classical and opera), but not to others (i.e. contemporary music). Next, there are music directors, who possess musical or conducting prowess, but who lack understanding of vocal pedagogy. Also, there are Speech Pathologists who have a thorough background in anatomy and vocal science, but desire a stronger understanding of the needs of singers. Finally, there are singers who would like to deepen their craft by understanding their vocal technique on the level that experienced Voice Technicians do. These are just some of the common participants in the NYVC Voice Teacher Training and Certification. However, there have been other examples of individuals seeking to improve their knowledge of voice teaching, vocal technique, and vocal pedagogy who have graduated the course.

While we are open to accepting any Voice Teacher, singer, musician, or speech pathologist who is passionate about studying the craft of Voice Teaching, most participants have at least 4 years of private vocal studies OR a university degree in music, theatre, speech, speech pathology, or voice OR significant experience as a professional musician. There have been exceptions to this. However, to get the most out of the course, it is helpful for trainees to already have a good understanding of their own vocal technique or a related craft.

The course involves some basic music theory and application of “Vocal Exercise Design”© that requires a small degree of familiarity with either music theory or a musical instrument, preferably the piano. It is not a requirement for trainees to have any specific piano qualifications to participate in the course. However, it is the recommendation of Mr. Stoney that participants seek to develop at least basic piano skills for their future success as Voice Teachers. Piano Training for Voice Teachers is offered by New York Vocal Coaching and can be easily and conveniently added as a supplement to the course hours if desired.

The 40-Hour Voice Teacher Training is offered to small groups of Voice Teachers. Studying in a small group allows participants to work as a team, challenge one another, benefit from many interactive scenarios, and develop a peer group of Voice Teachers from around the globe. To assure that substantial personal attention and mentoring is possible, we do limit the number of participants in each semester. Our application process assures the ideal educational situation and training environment for all participants. Unfortunately, due to the popularity of the program, we can only offer a limited number of spaces each semester. Once these spaces are filled, we are not able to add additional spaces.

The NYVC Voice Teacher Training is taught exclusively by Justin Stoney himself and not the New York Vocal Coaching Staff. Participants are welcome to have Private Lessons with the Associate Staff in addition to their training if they would like. However, all Teacher Training hours will be with Mr. Stoney.

The only exception to this is a guest lecture from Columbia University Medical’s Dr. Michael Pitman. Dr. Pitman is one of the leading laryngologists and medical voice specialists in the United States. His lecture for the NYVC Voice Teacher Training discusses “Vocal Health from the Medical Perspective” and features videos of the vocal folds, information on vocal pathologies and injuries, and the procedures of vocal surgeries. Dr. Pitman becomes a resource in the voice medicine community for Voice Teacher Training graduates and their students.

Dr. Michael Pitman of Columbia University Medical

Michael J. Pitman MD is Chief of the Division of Laryngology at Columbia University Medical Center. He serves as Director of the Voice and Swallowing Institute of ColumbiaDoctors, the faculty practice of CUMC.

Dr. Pitman is a recognized expert in voice restoration, conservation and care of the professional voice as well as in the care of swallowing and airway disorders. These areas include such illnesses such as vocal fold paralysis, cricopharyngeal dysfunction, spasmodic dysphonia, laryngopharyngeal reflux, chronic cough, laryngotracheal stenosis, vocal fold polyps, nodules and cysts.

Dr. Pitman received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he graduated as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his otolaryngology residency at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and was a fellow in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He previously served as Director of Laryngology at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and as the Laryngology Division Leader across the Mount Sinai Health System.

Dr. Pitman has been voted by his peers as one of the “Best Doctors in America”, as well as to New York Magazine “Top Doctors” and New York Times “SuperDocs”. Dr. Pitman has received numerous grants for pioneering research in the field of Laryngology. He has authored many articles for peer reviewed journals as well as book chapters, and he lectures extensively both nationally and internationally.

The NYVC 40-Hour Voice Teacher Training & Certification takes place over one 3-month semester. Trainings are offered in Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters. The schedule for each semester is customized around the schedules of participants.

Since this course is extremely intensive, it is not ideal for it to be done “quickly”. This is why the training is done over the course of an entire academic semester. We have developed a variety of options to meet students’ needs and have had success working with the scheduling needs of students from around the world as much as is possible.

The NYVC Voice Teacher Training takes place at our spacious facility in Midtown Manhattan. Our facility has plenty of space for lectures, master classes, private lessons, and practice opportunities for course participants. Course participants are also welcome to use the resources from our extensive library of vocal pedagogy books, music books, and scores.

International and out-of-state students have frequently opted to do the Voice Teacher Training over SKYPE. This has been an effective method for students who cannot come to New York for extended time periods. The majority of international and out-of-state participants have come to New York for a short “intensive” in addition to their participation over SKYPE. While this approach is encouraged, we have also had many participants successfully complete the full course over Skype. So, this does remain an option for those who cannot travel.

Graduates of the NYVC Voice Teacher Training will receive a framed diploma from New York Vocal Coaching that certifies the successful completion of the training. New York Vocal Coaching is a private educational company and is therefore not affiliated with accredited institutions. Thus, graduates may display NYVC Voice Teacher Training diplomas alongside any other certificates, degrees, awards, and organization affiliations they may have. Graduates also may indicate the NYVC Voice Teaching Training & Certification in their teaching resumes and bios.

Unlike several other Voice Teacher Certifications that are based on “methods”, the NYVC Voice Teacher Training does not make you beholden to New York Vocal Coaching in any way. Participating in the training does not make you a New York Vocal Coaching Associate, Teacher, or Staff member. It is simply an educational opportunity that is designed only to benefit you and your success. Your education and certification is designed to help you to develop your own private studio and master your craft as Voice Technician. We encourage you to use your Certification as a credential in your teaching career. However, the NYVC Voice Teacher Training does not cause you to be affiliated with New York Vocal Coaching in any way other than being a highly-respected institution in the music industry from which you received your training.

The full NYVC Voice Teacher Certification is only for those participants who have completed the 40-Hour Voice Teacher Training. However, those who have participated in the Mini-Course are welcome to use their training as a credential and are also eligible to participate in the complete Voice Teacher Training and Certification Program in the future.

The 10-Hour Introductory Mini-Course has a unique and customizable curriculum that is specifically designed for International and out-of-state individuals traveling to New York City for short time periods. It is also designed for those who are, for some reason, unable to participate in the full 40-Hour Course. The 40-Hour Course offers participants the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification curriculum in it's entirety, whereas the 10-Hour Course is meant to highlight the needs of each individual participant in a short time period. Because each course has distinct content and goals, the 10-Hour Introductory Course is a separate program from the 40-Hour Voice Teacher Training & Certification. The 10-Hour Advanced Voice Teacher Training is also a separate program that is available to graduates of the full course. Both of the 10-hour programs do compliment the complete training and participants are welcome to participate in more than one training.

All the materials and resources for the Voice Teacher Training are provided by New York Vocal Coaching. This will include exclusive written content, charts, diagrams, anatomy, and drawings as well as exclusive video content.

Graduates of the Voice Teacher Training will also be granted access to the NYVC Voice Teacher Alumni Forum. This Forum creates an ongoing community between past, present, and future NYVC Voice Teacher Training graduates from all around the world. This community of Voice Teachers is very generous in sharing their time, ideas, discoveries, and resources with one another as we continue the great journey of helping singers everywhere to “Make A Joyful Noise!”
