What is your greatest passion or joy as a singer, voice teacher, or vocal professional?
As a voice teacher, I love it when a student realizes that their voice has improved/expanded/grown. Sometimes it happens quickly and sometimes it’s very gradual, but it’s really exciting. As a singer, I love that my voice is still growing and changing.
Tell us the latest news about you, your studio, and your work!
I have adult and younger students who have difficulty matching pitch. I always promise them that it will change. I love the moment when I remind them, “Remember when this was difficult for you?”
What is an interesting or funny fact about you?
I love music theory – it’s my jam! And I watch Korean and Chinese dramas on TV.
What led you to the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification Program?
A voice teacher friend recommended the program to me.
What was your experience in the NYVC Voice Teacher Training & Certification Program?
I had a very positive experience with the program. My confidence in my teaching blossomed. There’s a clarity in the way that I work now.
What advice would you give to future participants of the Program?
Jump in with both feet whether you are a new voice teacher or one with years of experience.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an artist, teacher, or vocal professional?
Learning to sing while sick was always a challenge in my life as an artist. I stress vocal health as a teacher.
What was your greatest victory ever as an artist, teacher, or vocal professional?
My greatest victory as a vocal professional was winning the Tony, Drama Desk and Theatre World Awards in 1985 for my performance in Grind, co-starring with Ben Vereen being directed by Hal Prince. As a teacher, I still get jazzed when I’m working with students!
What is one piece of advice that you would love all singers to know?
Your voice can change and improve and make the sounds that you want in a healthy way.
What is something you've learned on your journey that you would love other vocal professionals to know?
You have to love it – the ups and the downs – and realize that it’s a gift to be able to express yourself in this way!
